English Language Learning (ELL)
The English Language Learning (ELL) program assists children whose first language is not English to become competent enough to participate fully in the School's mainstream social and academic life while all students are also encouraged to develop and maintain their mother tongue.
Teachers use interventions such as Individualized Learning Plans, consultation with subject area teachers, small group pull-out support, in-class support with an assigned One-to-One Assistant, accommodations, differentiation, scaffolding to tailor the curriculum to each student's individual needs. Students are also supported through various study skills workshops throughout the year in order to make sure that they incorporate successful learning patterns into their educational journey.
Learning Support
At Marymount diversity is a positive resource. The School is aligned to the IB learning philosophy by which “students are at the center of international education...with their own strengths and challenges”.
We strive to meet the needs of all learners and, as a responsibly inclusive School, we promote and protect the interests of children who learn in different ways or at different rates.
When a student experiences difficulty in school, their Homeroom teacher or Advisor and the relevant administrator review and implement plans together with the Learning Support Department to determine interventions, educational evaluations, accommodations, academic support, and/or a modified program.
Learning Support consists in ensuring that students receive accommodations as outlined in their Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), consultation with subject area teachers, small group pull-out support in all academic areas using a Study Skills class model (based on the IB's "Approaches to Learning" areas of knowledge), and in class support with an assigned One-to-One Assistant.
School Psychologist
As part of the comprehensive educational experience at Marymount, the School Psychologist is available to discuss with students issues related to academic planning and progress as well as personal and social development in order to succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally.
Occasionally, it is appropriate to conduct follow up with the students individually or in small groups in one or more areas. Our school policy is to notify parents and obtain written permission for counseling that extends beyond one visit in a school year or is planned on a regular basis.
The School Psychologist addresses the following:
- Student and family counseling in areas that affect school performance.
- Assessment of students to best maximize their learning potential.
- Ways to improve teaching, learning and socialization.
- Consultation with other faculty to provide the best learning environment for students.
Pet Therapy
Marymount's pet therapy dogs are also available to students in Learning Support and the Psychologists’ offices to enhance the students' wellbeing. Tilly, Bertie and Jazz are Pet-therapy trained and a wonderful addition to the support team for those students who request having them present at their sessions.
Health Center
Marymount's Health Center is located near the School's front gate in proximity of the sports facilities. A golf-cart is stationed in front of the Center to transport students from various parts of the campus as needed. Our School Nurse is available Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm, as well as during on campus sports games and other school events.
The Health Center is available to our students, faculty and staff members who may need assistance during the school day in case of illness or accidents.
The School Nurse has consultations with students, parents, teachers throughout the academic year and regularly circulates information regarding communicable diseases or infections (i.e. chicken pox, lice etc.) and their medication.
The School Nurse also schedules annual visual screening tests for students in the Elementary School in addition to visiting all classes and speaking about health-related issues (i.e. good hygiene, avoiding the spread of common colds and infections and more).
All students have a Health record which documents their health needs and vaccination information in addition to their allergies and any other matters which may need the assistance of the School Nurse (i.e. medication that needs to be administered during the school day).
The School Nurse also prepares and supplies First Aid kits and defibrillators to teachers who supervise off campus activities.
